1988 HD Softail Custom acts like it runs out of fuel.?

I have an 88 softail and am only able to use between 2.3 and 3 gallons of fuel before the bike acts like it is running out of fuel. If i switch to reserve it will not pick up and i have to pull over; then I rock the bike and it starts and runs for a few miles. Once I fill the tanks I am only using between 2.3 and 3 gallons. I checked the screen on the fuel petcock and that is not clogged. HELP

it sounds like you are only getting fuel from one of your tanks. since the softails of that year have split tanks, they have a cross feed on the front of the tanks, this tube is about 3/16 inch diameter, and they have a rubber hose between them. it is not unusual for a tank to develop rust in this area clogging the tube. I have also seen this after a paint job has been done and the tubes have not been cleared. it can also be caused by the hose being pinched and not allowing the fuel to cross feed. hope this helps.
