From the International Movie Data Base web site (IMDB.com), "According to Peter Fonda, four police bikes were customized for the film. One was burned during filming, and the other three were stolen before filming was completed."
Before the release of the film, someone or some group stole three of the four bikes used in the film. They only left the Captain America used for the explosion scene. The bikes never turned up, probably receiving a thorough strip job and sold for parts. The only original remained in Dan Haggerty's possession until 1996 when it sold on auction. It now sits in the Alamo Car Museum in New Braunfels, Texas. They had planned to use the bikes for publicity purposes and then keep them as mementos of the film.

Peter Fonda was an experienced motorcycle rider and the bike he rides in the movie is seriously stretched and raked and has tall "apehanger" style handlebars. Dennis Hopper was not as experienced a rider, therefore his bike is less radically chopped.
Peter Fonda wore the Capt. America jacket and rode his chopper a week around L.A. before shooting began to give them a broken-in look and to get used to riding the radically designed bike. The American flag on the back of the jacket and on the gas tank of the bike caused him to be pulled over several times by the police.

The rednecks in the Louisiana coffee shop who taunt the boys, and the two in the pickup truck at the end of the movie, were all local residents recruited by the filmmakers. In the case of the coffee shop denizens, the filmmakers were preparing to audition a group of local theater people when Dennis Hopper saw Causey, Lafont, et al, watching them and making wisecracks and decided to use them instead.
'Peter Fonda' 's character is only referred to by his real name one time in the entire movie. Billy (Dennis Hopper) does not refer to Captain America as "Wyatt" until the final campfire scene toward the end of the film.
Captain America's (Peter Fonda's) chopper was so "squirrely" to ride that at one stage Jack Nicholson (who was on the back) squeezed his knees on Peter Fonda's side to balance himself and broke one of Fonda's ribs.
Both the Captain America bike and the Billy Bike were designed and built by an African American bike builder named Ben Hardy. Fonda met Hardy when Hardy built the bike he rode in The Wild Angels (1966). Dennis Hopper is interviewed in the documentary "History of the Chopper" and confirms that it was Hardy who built the bikes.
In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked this as the #84 Greatest Movie of All Time.

The Pink Ones! LOL. No really, almost any Harley can be configured to be great for women riders. The secret for most is to get a lowering kit for the bike so that ladies with shorter legs can reach the ground more easily. Women may also want to have shorter front forks installed and may want to have handle bars which pull back further towards the seat to make reaching them not as uncomfortable. One of the more popular models seems to be the Dyna Low Rider. This particular Harley starts off lower to the ground, is a comfortable ride and doesn't take as much modification initially to be comfortable for ladies who want to buy a bike and hit the open road. Some peopls say sportsters are better for women, but most of the women I know who are serious riders do not like the sporties because they can ride a lot rougher than they really want. The engine mounts make the bike ride rougher. I know a wife of a friend of mine who had a brand new sporster 1200 and rode it from NM to CA and traded it back in as soon as she got back from the ride. It left her very stiff and sore for more than 2 weeks and she is a seasoned rider. She went to a Dyna and now loves the bike and has no more problems with vibration, discomfort, etc.
