What is a reasonable price to pay for an HD Sportster that is slightly used and in great condition?
Could you also give me some tips to consider when buying this motorcycle?
Um... don't know what kind... not necessarily custom, but that's my question- what kind should I get? I'm asking your opinion- I do not have a bike I'm looking at.
For a pre 2004 sportster, in excellent condition it is a buyers market. When the rubber mounted engine Sporty came out in 04, the earlier ones dived in the resale dept., and have not recovered. Try to find a 1200 if at all possible, and not somebodies 883 that has been turned into a 1200. In my job for H.D. I have seen many problems, such as voided warrantys, factory and extended for this. Also, the 04 + is smoother, and makes more power stock. If you are a begginingg rider, I would look at a few other lower maintenance bikes for a first ride. Price wise in my area, I have sold 99-2003 1200 Sportsters in like new condition 4999-8999. The 883s for 3999 for an average 96-97 to as much as 5999 for an 03 Anniversary Edition, with Custom paint, and lots of accessories. Dealers were dumping 03 883s for as little as $5995 new here in the fall of 03, so the resale is not that hot. Buyer beware, and go online and look at the many used Sportsters and V-Rods both for sale. The 04 and 05 1200 Sportster Customs are a nice ride however. They have a bigger tank, and as I said a smoother engine. Good Luck

an a 1980 HD Ironhead Sportster run on unleaded fuel?
Is it necessary to add a fuel agent to prevent burning the valves?
use 93 octane or better you dont need anything to prevent burning the valves, unless the engine is older than 1978
Taller shocks and fork springs. I do internet sales at a H-D dealership and if you email us at: (include model & year of bike) we can give you some part numbers and reduced prices on the parts.

Sweet Bike have you seen my Buell still alot more going on to it just ordered a 2 up seat and tail section
they used to make lowering links that moved the lower shock mount farther back on the end of the swing arm, don't know of they are still available.
if your building the bike & have to paint it anyway you could cut the swing arm & weld in a piece to make it longer.
you can always cut a couple of coils off the spring & put it back together. the shock wont work quite right but your old ones probably are worn & dont work like they originall did anyway.
I’m 26 and I ride a 2009 HD Sportster 1200 Low. It is a good starter bike and very comfortable for me to learn on. I dont see why we have to hate on brands. You like foregin bikes.. I happen to like harles and will be upgrading soon. That said if a forgin bike falls in my lap I’d gladly take it but I perfer HD.
