why the Harley dealer for service?
i called the harley dealer the other day to check on having my roadkind serviced. they told me they were running about 2 weeks behind and that the cost of my 20,000 mile service would be around $500.00. everyone always says to take it to the dealer for service. but is there really $500.00 worth of fluids to replace. they told me that along with the fluids they check wheel bearings, tighten all fasteners, ect. mmmm.....for a guy with a lot of mechanical knowledge that does not seem like a lot of hard work. so what is the scoop. do they do some type of work that the skilled do it yourself guy is unable to do. i am interested in hearing everyones comments.
The real reason they want you to bring your scoot back is so they get the $$$$$$$$........buy yourself a manual, and take your time going through the steps. Obviously your not going to be doing any machining on it yourself, but the basic fluid changes and belt tightening should be alright. A plus is you get to know your bike inside and out, and will be able to work on it if , God forbid, you should break down somewhere by yourself...I have been riding for 30 years so take that for what it is worth I guess...

Will Harley dealers buy a bike for their used inventory?
I'm needing to sell my 2004 Sportster 883C; it's nicely customized with all HD accessories and is ultra clean. Does anyone know if Harley dealers need bikes and if so, will they buy them from original owners?
Most dealers will take bikes on trade and some will sell on consignment. But it all depends on the individual dealer on what they will do. One shop maybe sitting on a few of the same model already and doesn't need it as bad as another that doesn't have any in stock. Dealership don't have problems taking bikes from original owners and from ever owner afterwards. Just as long as you have a clean title for it.
But to be honest I personally would just try selling the bike yourself. Even with all of the goodies you may have on the bike their not going to come close to giving you what you probably want for it. The dealer is going to give you a trade in value with a fraction of the cost for each accessory you slapped on. Place a ad in your local paper, eBay or even Yahoo classifieds. I'm sure the extra cash you get could always be put towards some other cool item for the ride. I know I can always find another must have item when looking through my catalogs.

Thank you very much for the responsible quiet riders, I greatly appreciate it. In fact it is almost shocking to see a quiet motorcycle, I have the strange urge to to shake the motorcyclists hand in thanks.
The above post, mentioning personal responsibility in place of laws and enforcement is simply not going to work, simple as that. What do you think about the actions of many Harley dealerships who clearly swap out stock legal mufflers for loud ones (this is called tampering and is supposed to make any business making these modifications subject to heavy fines).
Here is the advertisement from the Harley dealership near me, “Maybe you just want that awesome earth-quaking, window-rattling exhaust that sets off car alarms as you ride on by. Want to make men dive out of the way and women grab their children and head inside and lock the doors? We can help with that too!”; 2 out of 18 advertised “performance packages” are described as “street legal”.
I live next to the home of our first president, leading into a national park area. There are easily 200 illegal motorcycles that can be heard in any part of my home over any activity on a Saturday or Sunday. My home is over 200 ft. from the road, and we can't hear anything else.
Is it any wonder that cities like NYC are considering a $1000 fine and impounding the bike for using mufflers that don't have the EPA label. I wish we could simply ban motorcycles from neighborhoods.
I’m surprised there’s still so much hard feelings and finger-pointing on the Buell situation. They simply weren’t competitive at that price point and folks didn’t buy them in sufficient numbers to make a profit. The MOCO did the right thing and stopped it. They were good bikes and probably had more performance than most riders will ever need, but like exotic sports cars-that’s not what sells sportbikes. They hobbled them selves by starting out with the XL-based powerplant and seemed to feel that just “being a Harley” would make folks line up to pay more than a ZX14. It wasn’t Harley’s marketing or lack thereof-if folks had wanted Buells they would have found them and bought them. Harley dealerships are often good traffic “destinations” and even a dark corner would have more deep pockets walking by it than most metric dealerships. A key component in expensive sports cars selling is that they can’t get beat up by inexpensive sports cars, even if it’s just in magazines.

If the price is right, see if the owner will split the bill and take the bike to a respectable shop and have a tech go through the bike from one end to the other and do a repair sheet on the bike.
If he's willing then you will have peace of mind, if not then walk away (or run).
I’ve been riding different road bikes for over 30 years, but I will admit the Harley is in my heart. However, we are speaking of Victory’s sales technique. I recently met the owner of the local Victory dealership. Knowing how dedicated to riding I am he always has the same thing to say “Kim, that’s an awful nice bike you have but come on in anytime, pick any bike you want and ride it for a few days. You’ll want to keep it”

Yes , probably the money the seller is asking probably not worth it unless its the steal of a lifetime
I know two guys with harley's one a road king the other FXR. the king has 132 thousand and it is just now going in for a top in rebuild, mostly cause he wanted to port and polish the heads and figured he would have them redone while in the shop.
The FXR has 147,000 miles on it, runs like a dream, had cams replaced due to wear at about 130,000.
I'd buy it.
it probably depends on his price…. you can rejug it for $1000 bucks, and i'd pay close attention to how well it shifts to make sure it all still synchs well.
