Local Harley Dealer is having an open house today, free test rides, free food and drinks, should I go or not?
and if i do go how should I dress? clean shaven or not?
do or do not arrive on my rice rocket? drive my American made truck to the dealership?
and suppose I do get to test ride a Harley and the dealer asks me what I think of it, should I lie and tell him I loved it, or tell the truth and tell him its a POS?
would everybody else hate me if I showed off a little showing everybody that im a much better rider than them, maybe even trying to ride a wheelie or doing a tire burn-out on a Harley?
i really think that you're over thinking the whole thing. unless it's a giant party, i wouldn't really worry about how you look. the dealer is doing an open house, if you feel you really want to test drive some of the harleys, then i say go for it and enjoy yourself. dress casually and i wouldn't suggest doing a wheelie or doing a tire burn out unless you want to look like a total jerk. if you feel uncomfortable with the whole idea, then don't go.

Harley-Davidson fell on hard times due to the same economic euphoria that led to our current economic situation. As a Harley dealer I could not believe the amount of expansion they invested in during the last decade. It has come back and bit them hard. Fortunately, they did not bury themselves like Chrysler or GM. Who is paying the price for these mistakes? Many Harley dealers have gone out of business due to the highly-demanding requirements of Harley to build Taj Mahal dealerships with the corresponding overhead. But the ones that have taken it the hardest are the factory workers plus a large number of salaried workers who are no longer employeed.
well theres a minute of my life i aint gunna eva get back lmao
Really sad for this HD decision. Here in Italy Buell bikes are not the most common bikes but there is a large group of fans, and they are really appreciated. That's unfair…
Add Buell to the list of american motorcycle manufacturers that met their end too soon.
well theres a minute of my life i aint gunna eva get back lmao
My teenage years, I was a metal-head. I hung around the local Harley dealer (Cajun Cycles then, Cajun Harley-Davidson now) and wore my H-D t-shirts until they were rags, along with my black jeans, chain wallet, and combat boots. That phase lasted from 13-16 or so. Fast forward 12 years, and I’m a bored guy with a great job, but not much excitement in his life. I started thinking about how much I used to want to ride, how I loved the Harleys, etc. So I convinced the wife to take the MSF course with me, after which I went to ~20 dealers and sat on fairly well every bike in their used inventories. Once I’d narrowed down the style of bike I wanted, I started test-riding VTX1800s and Valkyrie 1500s. I didn’t even look at H-D, because I wanted to be riding it, not fixing it, and didn’t have a Harley budget anyhow- so I was primarily looking at metric cruisers. I’d been eyeing this VTX1800R at the nearby Honda dealership, but didn’t have the $9900 they were listing it at. So I hit CycleTrader and found one two towns over, decked out with farkles, 23k on the clock, listed at $8900. On the phone, ole boy sayd $8500. Then I showed up in person, saw the bike sitting next to his new GoldWing on one side, and 2 6′ tall Snap-On chests on the other, on a painted garage floor. Dude pulled out every receipt for service on the bike, reflecting that he’d had the 8k service done at 7993 and the 16k service at 15990… I was sold. I indicated some interest and he went down to $8k as we talked. I walked away and went home, slept on it, and then got my cash together. Went over with a mechanic buddy who gave me the thumbs up, and then I proceeded to negotiate.
I got him down to $7300 before he cried uncle. Pulled it out of the driveway, rode down to the end of the street, and went to flip a U-Turn. Made it too wide, caught the edge of the curb and promptly, at a dead stop, dropped the bike on it’s left side. Got it back up solo, rode back to where my buddy was beginning to turn my truck around to come and see if I was ok, and waved him on. Got it home in one piece and spent 2 months getting comfortable with riding before I let myself on the freeway. 3 years later, I’m on ole girl #2- in July the first one got knocked out from under me at 35mph by an idiot who jumped into the ‘vacant’ right lane straight on top of me. Totaled her out after putting 20k on her in 2 years, and I’m still fighting the insurance settlement on my medical bills. Bought an identical orange VTX1800R from a National Guardsman in Houston a month after the wreck, tossed it in the back of a rental pickup (easier to load than my 4×4, and my clutch hand was still mostly unusable) and brought it home.
Yes, Harleys are different than other motorcycle makes.
The cycle shops that you have talked to are most likely trained to repair Japanese cycles.
Fact is, people that own Harleys are more difficult to deal with than Yamaha, Kawasaki, ect.
Guess we are just more particular than most, about our bikes.
I own a custom Harley, and do all of my own work on it.
I am also a Master Mechanic, and owner of a repair business in MD.
If you are in need of some advice on how to perform routine maintenance on your bike, I can help you by email. marsllc@comcast.net
