What is the left-hand tank cap on a Harley Davidson softail 1997 for, and how does it open?
If it is like my wifes 98 Softail, it is the gas cap for the left hand tank and it has reverse threads. To open it, turn it back wards.
It is a - non vented - cap... Fill your left tank 1st when gassing up. When the left tank is filled, cap it and keep the cap snug. Fill the right hand tank now...
If you do it back wards, the right tank flows into the left hand side and you run the risk of spilling gas from the left side when you remove the cap (another reason it is a non vented cap) and another reason it has reverse threads so you can not get the 2 mixed up.
If - someone put a newer tank on, and I don't know how because the frames are different, but IF the cap has a actual gas gage in it, do not try to twist it off. It is NOT meant to be taken off. However, I doubt you have this and you have 2 Fat Bob tanks plumbed together at the front bottom by gas line connecting the two.
