I'm wanting suggestions on rebuiling a bike?
I recently was given a 1976 Harley Davidson 1200 sportster AMF model. The bike has been setting for about 20 years with the crank case off of it. I was wondering if the engine would be worth rebuiling or should I go a different route. The bike is going to take alot of work but it is a project that I wanted to do with my boys. So any suggestions would be nice.
I've really come to respect Crash over the past few months... The guy knows his Iron... And the new Avatar is kewl. (nice bike)
Anyhow.... IMO If you have mechanical experience and got the bike for free It would definitely be worth it. But be prepared for some frustration.
If you don't have mechanical experience and patience you might be better served selling it on eBay and putting the money towards an Evo or another project.
Here are a few things I can suggest from my past and recent experience:
1: Buy a Factory service manual and a Clymer Manual - you can get a good FSM on eBay for around ten bucks and shipping: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/70-78-HARLEY-DAVIDSON-SPORTSTER-XL-XLH-SERVICE-MANUAL_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34236QQihZ007QQitemZ170158148145QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
2: Join this Yahoo Group:

3: Find parts here: http://www.jpcycles.com/vintage.aspx
And here: http://www.vtwinmfg.com/NewVtwinWeb/index.html
The resale value of Ironheads isn't much. Keep that in mind while rebuilding it. It can be easy to put way more money into the bike than you will get out of it if you sell it. Most of the people I know who still own Ironheads are people who have a passion for bikes with soul. Ironheads are most often a labor of love.
Good luck!

Minus the Vrod series, what is the difference between Harley Davidson models, are they just different sizes?
They all look alike and the website uses descriptions like "braided fuel lines" "exposed battery box" "5 gallon fuel tank"...but don't they all have the same engine (minus the sportster or vrod)?
Basically the same cake with different frosting....not just with models this year but going back 70+ years. A 900 knucklehead from the 1920's was the same antique 40 horsepower as the 883 sportster of today.
Compare that with any other brand of motorcycle. Honda for instance makes dozens of completely different bikes with completely different engines, 1, 2, 4, 6, cylinder, air or water cooled, Harley builds an antique V-twin period. Honda makes bikes from totally off road to the most luxurious touring bike, Harley builds crusiers period. And in 5 or 10 years Honda's bikes will in a large part be radically improved upon, leaving this years bike not worth much because there is better performance in a newer model.
The reason a 10 or 20 or 30 year old harley is still worth alot is that it is not that different from today's harley.

Do you have any models that fit a Big-Dog K-9? When I am looking in catalogs what, if any, Harley-Davidson models would cross reference and fit my K-9?
