Are Harley's really the best Bikes, or are they Overrated?
Im looking to buy my first bike. interested in buying a 2009 Harley Street Bob.. I know theres alot of bikes out there. Are Harleys really the best or are they Overrated? What other bikes should i check out?
How are the V Star Bikes?
First, I'd suggest taking a safety course from MSF before buying a bike.
Harleys are fine, but are generally too big for a first time rider. Basically, all the major manufacterors build reliable bikes.
The V-Star 650 is about the largest I'd recommend for a new rider. They are very reliable and will do anything you ever NEED to do. The only problem is, their maintenance schedule is a little expensive. The other problem is they have a carburator which means they need to warm up a bit. Also they have a reserve tank instead of a fuel gauge. I find that rather annoying.
A better starter bike is the Suzuki S40. It's much lighter and has about the same size engine. I am pretty sure the maintenance is less.
You might also check out the Kawasaki Vulcan 500. This is a good size for a beginner.
If Harley is a dream for you, consider it for a second bike.
In the end, it's up to you. All the bikes by the major manufactorers are good.

Interesting article, I drive a Kawasaki cruiser. Some of the guys like to push there Harley's with the built in America argument. I read before that Kawasaki built it's motorcycles in the USA, but some of the guys say that they're just “assembled” in the US, it that true.
I love all motorcycles, however I don't buy into their argument as I've seen “Made in Japan” on some of the Harley bikes as well.
Did you learn anything about this during your tour?
Most women I know ride 883's, but my wife rides a Dyna "low rider" She took MSF course. Learned on a lowly 250 Suzuki. I bought her a Honda VLX 600 for starters. After 1st Daytona bike week event, she HAD TO HAVE a Harley of some sort. The LOW RIDER fit her best, so she got one. LOVES IT! She's 5'10" & weighs about 160 LBS.
There is no maintenance. Change it every 25k mi. and you’re good to go, which is about the same interval as a chain. With a chain, you also have to replace the sprockets, which are just an added cost. Overall, a belt is a cheaper way to go on a motorcycle. All Harley bikes run a belt, and they have a LOT of torque. Also, If it were ever to break and come up and hit you or the bike, it would do less damage than a heavy metal chain. I’ve never had it slip. If it did, it would most likely break the little nubs off. There’s a tensioner on the motorcycle. I don’t think there’s an active tensioner on a bicycle belt.
