Can someone tell me what makes a Harley Davidson a good bike?
I am a car guy so it is clear to me where Benz, BMW and Cadillac rank and why. I am trying to get a better understanding of what makes Harley a top notch bike, or is it?
Very simple. Harleys are better bikes due to the fantastic marketing department. Harleys are big pieces of crap. The only exception is the VRod, which was engineered by Porsche and designed by Ness. Harley only MAKES the bike. Now, before all of you Harley guys start jumping all over me, I work on HD motorcycles along with all other brands. HD's are under-engineered, they ARE NOT 100% american, alot of the parts are taiwanese and chinese, just assembled here- so you can stop the "buy American" BS right there. HD sells a lifestyle, not the best bike. HD sells more T-shirts every day than motorcycles produced since 1903. Think about that. I am sure you know of a number of people with the HD stickers, shirts, Ford P/U trucks and boots that don't even know how to ride.. They are marketing geniuses. The bikes are sub-standard compared to other makes. Want American? Go buy a Victory. Pound for pound, a better bike. They actually had to DECREASE the cooling of the oil because the bike is actually engineered correctly, versus the "hot" second cylinder that has plagued HD since, well, 1903!.. I ride a Triumph and a BMW, average 20K+ per year, and work on many bikes. I frequently get HD owners that tell me that they ride "a bunch" every year, and it turns out that 1500 miles per year is "a bunch"!! Hell, that's a weekend for me! I NEVER have mechanical problems, my bikes are comfortable, and they handle!! Nothing like this can be said of 90% of the HD's out there. I do not mean to beat up HD's so much, but a fact is a fact. I am leaving you with 3 of my favorite sayings: 1. A harley by any other name would be just as slow. 2. If HD made an airplane, would you fly in it? and 3. 98% of all HD's made are still on the road- the other 2% made it home. Have a nice day, do not fall into the HD lifestyle trap, buy a real motorcycle, and enjoy the ride!
LOL the Harley bike cop reminds me of a time when I broke down on I-10 near Causeway (Jefferson, LA) driving a Honda Civic I was considering buying for my then girlfriend, and a tie rod gave way at 60mph. I ended up chatting with a Causeway cop, female, for over an hour while waiting for a tow truck. In an hour's time, I learned in considerable detail how her co-workers treated her (like a Barbie doll) and how she was upset with her hubby because he did not support her decision to become a cop. I'll admit it was all I could do to not ask her for her number…sigh
8-8 ahh better than 9 to 9 don't you think? lol Work—A vicious cycle…Nice song…A lot of times I feel like running away in a fast car or maybe a Harley bike.. but nothing is motivating enough for the run away… I packed so many times, I had plans, but I always end up sleeping on the same 15 yrs old bed, the bed that was and will always be my run away since I was a kid.. Harley Owners Group – Coming soon to India Quote The Indian arm of premium bike maker, Harley-Davidson, plans to set up a Harley Owners Group, popularly known as HOG, in India shortly. The HOG is a sponsored community marketing club,operated by Harley-Davidson for its enthusiasts. “We are planning to start the Harley Owners Group sometime in October. Any person who buys a Harley bike automatically becomes the member of HOG,” Harley-Davidson’s Director (Marketing), Sanjay Tripathi, told media here. He, however, did not divulge the number of bikes the company has sold in the last one year through its four dealerships pan-India.

I remember going from righteous bro to Japcrapscum when I’d get off my ’79 FL and onto my ’86 Shadow-all in the same day I still get folks with huge American flags hanging off their increasingly foreign Harley bike, talking smack to me when I’m on my “made in Ohio” Valkyrie. That’s the “Harley belongs to America” crap.” IMHO.
You can seal your nome with an acrylic sealant spray (available from most hardware shops)- DON'T forget to spray the base!!!
