2009 harley davidson XL1200N....Oil Change. Do I have to use the HD Oil sold at the dealer?
or can I use an alternative like lucas oil....?
I defin. use synthetic and may just go with HD Syn3
No man,...you are not required to use HD oil to keep your warranty in force. Even if you want to use another filter such as K&N, that would work the same way...besides, the K&N exceeds factory specs anyway. I used the Mobil 1 VTwin oil for a long time. On the advice of an independent bike shop proprietor I switched to the Lucas 20w50 full synthetic in the motor AND the primary: wow. My oil temp is down.. never goes above 200. My machine is quieter; cylinder noise is down. -And I get better fuel mileage. In the tranny I went with the Lucas 75/90 synthetic gear lube. Man it goes into and changes gears now without the "clunk"...its fantastic.
Now some guys have been talking about the Royal Purple. I know a guy in another town that uses it in a Suzuki Bandit 1250 and he says it hangs tough in the four cylinder...
I don't know who makes the HD oil... Valvoline? Bel-Ray? I do know the oil has to meet certain standards for HD, but hey, its subjective for them..
Besides,.. its a bid system: Bel-Ray might have the contract for this year, and Valvoline (Ashland Oil Co) might have had the contract last year...HD ain't sayin'.

AND The HD dealer has NO authority on warranty issues, the corporate office has complete control. The dealer could have a justifiable reason to refuse warranty service but if corporate says "fix it", it gets fixed.... no argument.
It appears you know two things about Harley's: Jack, and Sh*t. Please put your masters degree in tiddlywinks to good use. There must be someplace you can get top dog status with your powers of reasoning and superior intellect...this ain't it. Somewhere there is a group of 7 year olds you can keep riveted.
