Can someone help with this Trigonometry problem?
I need help with this trig problem:
A pilot has just started on the glide path for landing at an airport with a runway length of 9000 feet. The angles of depression from the plane to the ends of the runway are 17.5 degrees and 18.8 degrees.
a) Find the air distance the plane must travel until touching down on the near end of the runway.
b) Find the ground distance the plane must travel until touching down.
c) Find the altitude of the plane when the pilot begins the descent.
From the plane, the pilot is looking down at 17.5 degrees to the near end of the runway and down 18.8 degrees to the far end of the runway. So you have a triangle whose base is 9000' and its corresponding angle is 1.3 degrees (18.8 -17.5).
A) is to find the distance from the plane to the near end of the runway.
We know the interior angle opposite the side from the plane to the near end of the runway is 17.5 degrees, so using the law of sines
sin a/A = sin C/c
we have
sin(1.3)/9000 = sin(17.5)/A
or A = 9000 * sin(17.5)/sin(1.3) = 119,289.126feet

Part B, the horizontal distance to the end of the runway (ground distance):
cos(18.8) = horz_distance/a, were A is from part a
or horz_distance - A * cos(18.8) = 119,289.126 feet * cos(18.*)
horz_distance = 112,924. 96 feet
Part C, the altitude of the plane, is
sin(18.8) = altitude/A, were A is from part a.
altitude = A * sin(18.8) = 119,289.126 feet * sin(18.8)
altitude = 38,442.79 feet.
