Harley Davidson Twin Cam 88 emitting gas vapors?
I own an HD FXSTB with a TC 88. I recently added the Screamin Eagle Heavy Breather to compliment the Performance of my Vance and Hines Short Shot Pipes. I had the breather professionally installed and the Download done by the dealership (Fuel Injected). However, my fellow bikers complain that when behind me they get a vapor smell coming from the pipes. Is this normal when running performance pipes and breather or did the dealership mess up the download. Any advice is appreciated.
The V&H Shortshots (1986-06 Softail) don't have a boss to install the o2 sensor for the fuel injection, so the bike is always running in open loop mode instead of closed loop mode. A closed loop system running at cruise speed with no o2 sensor will create a rich condition. The download that the dealership did was probably correct for a bike that has had breather and exhaust modifications, the system just can't work correctly because it doesn't have all the pieces of the puzzle.
The Shortshots Staggered for EFI models have the o2 sensor boss. Does your exhaust have the o2 sensor installed and working correctly? Are you getting any DTC codes, such as the Security light coming on for 8 seconds when you turn on the ignition switch? If there isn't wiring coming from your exhaust pipe, then you've got the wrong pipes.

Harley Davidson Bagger Dyno Run 88 CI Fuel Injected
harley does not idle well?
i have a 2001 Harley Roadking. when it is cold and for the first 5 or 6 miles it will idle really well. after it gets warmed up it wants to die when you pull up to a light or stop sign. going steady down the road it is smooths as glass. it has a fuel injected engine. is this a quick fix issue i can maybe just turn a screw on. any help would be terrific. thanks a lot
chris if at all listen to me here ok, my gosh i cant believe some of the responses... you have a magnetti merelli fuel injected roadking. to set the idle on these and to do it correctly is a little involved, you will need to take it to your dealer so it can be monitored on digital tech as the bike warms up the idle will drop, thats normal but these systems are touchy and need extra attention. when you start your bike it should go high idle for approx 5 sec and gradually come back down to around 1100 rpm as iti warms up. after the tech has set the cold and hot idle you must unplug your main fuses for a few minutes to reset the ecm. this will learn it so it wont react to old settings. your bike needs to set with engine temp at approx 270 degrees and the cold idle needs to be set with the pintle or iac unplugged. big process chris and should be done by a trained tech . k good luck

It sounds like you have a lot of people answering that have never ridden the bikes in question. Used motorcycles are a lot like used cars, they run according to how they have been taken care of in the past. You don't want to go to an older model, with a Harley newer is better. My 2004 Sportster has the rubber mounted engine (pre 2004 sportsters are all solid mount) like the big bikes that allows it to run very smooth except at idle where it shakes like a Harley is supposed to. I personally have had this bike, with the only modifications of performance exhaust and rejetted carbuated, 1200cc bike up to 113 mph with a windshield and after 22000 miles has never vibrated anything loose. I also have a 2002 FLHTCUI, Ultra Classic 88cid fuel injected bike that will run over 100 mph anytime I ask it too, that runs so smooth at highway speeds my wife goes to sleep on the passenger seat. The 2000 and up softails have been counterbalanced to eliminate the "shake" even at idle. The 2006 models come stock with a 96cid engine and a 6 speed tranny. Harley Davidson has come a long way in the past 20 years. If you want a Harley for speed look at the V-Rods, 130mph+ right out of the crate. Test ride more than one Harley before making your decision. Most dealers have several demos where you can ride a new bike or they will let you test ride any used bike.
