House Training a puppy in cold weather?
We just got a small 4mo old 6lb puppy from a shelter we think she is an italian greyhound... so very little to no fur.I made her a custom fit coat with sleeves and a martingale colar even, but no one has ever tried to house train. Obviously that was our first goal, and she does pretty ok during the day, but when the temp drops at night she freezes up and will not move more than to shiver and beg to be picked up. with or without the coat! I have tried sitting out there with her forever, taking her back repeatedly to the spot she goes at during the day... even tried puppy pads and locking her in the bathroom... the puppy pads are a joke, she moves them out of her way to go where they were, so how do I get her to go outside when it is cold?
We have italian greyhounds that we show, and let me tell you they are HELL to housebreak. Last year one of ours seemed to learn very quickly, he would go right to the potty pad every time and then... he didn't ever again for almost a month. For our iggies, it takes anywhere from 2 months of training (CONSTANTLY watching and monitoring) to 5 months. Some iggies never really do housebreak, cold weather or rain will give them the excuse in their mind to use your house.
We sometimes housetrain ours on litter boxes, though is is a HUGE pain to keep clean and maintain-but it is better for someone who doesn't have the time to take a puppy outside every 5 minutes, and especially for an ig who doesn't like the cold. There are alot of iggie litter box sites and suggestions on how to litter box train.
You just have to keep on her and monitor constantly, it may take awhile but don't give up. Sometimes it seems like one day it just "clicks" and they start going where you want them to.

Couldn't get into NIGHT TRAIN, even though I like unusual takes on the mystery genre (James Crumley is a favorite author). I am, however, a big fan of Amis' DEAD BABIES, a book that had me laughing out loud at that particularly black, particularly British form of humour that Amis employs. Good post, thanks for highlighting such a terrific writer…

Hello S
We live in Boston USA and are planning a trip to China in June. We are thinking of taking the night train from Guilin to Shenzhen. I see that you did this and wondered if you could tell me more. Would you recommend this trip for two non-Chinese speaking travelers? The compartments look nice – were they? Thank you for any travel insights.

[...] It took me quite a while to turn my opinion around. It was the TEFL conference in Baku. I met up with him and another volunteer to take the night train to Baku. Somehow that weekend we connected and became great friends. He even came back to Ming with me on the electric train and stayed the night with Jesse and me before heading back to his site. I remember talking with him the entire 6 hour train ride. It was nice because we could speak English fast enough that no one could understand us, not even Gulnaz. [...]

Great dancing but one thing is very odd about James Brown between 1965 and 1972. He seemed to stop doing splits during this period (after the TAMI Show and started again in 1972 on Soul Train). In every recorded concert or TV show appearance in between that time (Boston Garden concert 1968, Mike Douglas, 1970, Paris concert 1971, etc) he doesn't do any splits. Even here he does a push up but no split!!! No one has ever been able to figure this out.
I usually wake up a few times a night. Thats why I have to take maletonin and ambien (together). On bad nights, I have to take them with some scotch! Now I dont recommend you do that at all. However, 5 hours per night is not healthy. You might want to try some light exercise later in the day. Avoid caffine and sugars after 8pm. You can try maletonin. Its herbal and not perscription. With time, your body may adjust to waking up later. Good luck.
(nice to finally see u posting something)
I was so broken by the news of Freddie's recent passing, he was a real gentleman and great performer, the gain is Heavens and the loss is ours. My love and prayers goes out to his family. God rest your Funky soul Kung Fu Man.
