Which direction do Harley Softail fork springs go?
I have a 1989 Softail Custom with a White Bros. front end lowering kit. I recently disassembled the front suspension in order to replace the lower sliders. When I took the long springs out of the tubes, the tightly wound end of the springs was facing downwards towards the ground. When I checked the service manual and part manual, it appears that the tightly wound end should be facing up.
Which way is correct and for what reason? Thanks.
I have always installed the tightly wound spring up. Unless the replacment legs are shorter or longer you should change the spring size.

Motorcycle build help.?
After much research and test rides, I have decided a Harley Sportster is the best bike for me considering the power I am after and comfort. If I had the money, I would buy an 883 right now. I don't want the 1200. I am interested to know if it is possible to build a sportster copy. Are the parts made/available? There are many TV shows showing people building custom choppers from parts, but you never see these builders making plain bikes. I am not interested in building something bigger than the 883 and I could care less that it says Harley all over it. Have any of you ever tried this? Any feedback (at least constructive) is welcome. Thanks.
You can do it, but it will not be cost productive. There are not many manufactures who reproduce an 883 engine. You would be a lot better off buying a used 883 and rebuilding it to your style.
A new 883 is about $8000
a frame will cost you close to $1000
an engine $2000
forks and swing arm $1500-$2500
Wheels and tires $800
Paint $600+
fenders and tank $1500
levers, bars, seat, pegs controls.......$1500
There are heaps of aftermarket pipes that you can fit to your bike.
The first ones that spring to mind is Lazer and Staintune. Both will give the bike a good sound. GTY-R may also make a exhaust system for your bike and it will be specifically designed for you bike to optimise power, but dont be a Harley pretender. Put on pipes that a specailist advises you to fit for more power and sound.
Its a good idea to have sports air filters fitted at the same time, and also have the carbs rejetted and tuned to suit.
If you want a Harley sound, buy a Harley. Your bike will have its own unique sound.
