IIRC to remove the starter you need to remove the primary cover on the left side of the engine. It's not a hard job but takes a couple hours. Are you sure it's the starter? I've seen the relays go out on these bikes more then I've seen the starter fail. You can make a jumper wire to bypass the relay by using a three inch piece of 14 gauge wire and two 1/4 inch male crimp terminals. It could also be the starter switch. Have you checked for voltage at the starter relay?
If you would like help on this let me know and I will try to give you as much help as I can. And since the Buell uses the same engine that the Sportsters have I would also check with http://www.sportster.org/ for a used starter if you really do need one. They have a lot of people on there that do all there own work and are very helpful to others that want to save money on repairs of their bikes.

Buell vs. Harley drag bike
Worst case scenario for buying a 2004 Buell?
I'm thinking about buying a 2004 XB9S from the Harley dealership in town, has 2,000 miles. I have heard good things about Buell and I've heard bad things about Buell. Also heard that the early models are not reliable and that the new Buells should have no problems. Anybody been an owner that can give me some tips or a heads up before buying?
The earlier Buell's did have problems, mostly with the frame and rubber mounting setup. It is like a Norton isolastic. I heard that they were very good about rectifying those problems, however.
The new models are quite reliable, by all accounts that I have heard. These new bikes have very new ideas and unique construction details but have been quite sturdy. Comparing them to the earlier conventional tube construction it seems strange, but I guess they worked on this design a lot.
The japanese are starting to copy some of the Buell details, like hiding most of the muffler under the engine. Using the frame for the fuel tank is a first, as is the swingarm as an oil tank. They even re-invented the wheel!
If you are attracted to the Buell you won't be happy with a plastic japanese bike. I surely wouldn't buy a used rice rocket, not after watching them ridden by the kind of people who buy them.
I have not been a Buell owner. I did test ridde a Buell before I bought my W650.

Contrary to what the Eric Buell video might lead one to believe, the Blast will continue to be manufactured, continue to be used as a training bike in Rider's Edge classes, and continue to be offered for sale at H-D/Buell dealerships. It will be badged as a Blast, not a Buell, not a Harley, just Blast. This information comes straight from Tim Becker's mouth at the SMSA business meeting in Madison, WI, on Friday, 8/21/2009. Tim Becker is employed by H-D, and his title is Manager Rider's Edge.
This would have been a great bike to bring Buell & Harley to the front of the sport bike industry. Unbelieveable, that Harley screwed this up so badly. Have to buy this issue to read it closely.

Shawn, I'm sure you're way ahead of me on this, and it's easy from my end to just dabble without doing the leg-work, but have you looked into trying to put together a broad consortium of Buell/Harley dealers as sponsors (spread out enough that nobody would be stepping on anybody elses toes)?
There are hundreds of dealers across the country who can't afford to sponsor their own team but would probably love to be able to hang up posters of you in action or posing by your bike wearing one of their T-Shirts and call you “their” rider.
Maybe for $20,000 (or some other price that would make it work) they could get a 2″ by 2″ logo that could be part of a grid of logos on the bike along with some promotional materials they could hang up at the store etc.
You could even give special attention when you're in their area such as wearing the T-shirt for the Alabama dealer when you're at Barber and stopping by for promotional events at their store (maybe charge an extra fee for those services).
Just throwing out an idea. Like I say, you're probably already way ahead of me on this . . . and hopefully by now you've already got Coke all signed up and on-board and all of this is moot.
Wut a deuche bag! Ima “lock the throttle” lmao
